XRE200 Modules

Virtual Chassis Control Interface (VCCI) Modules in an XRE200 External Routing Engine

Virtual Chassis Control Interface (VCCI) modules provide Virtual Chassis ports (VCPs) within an EX8200 Virtual Chassis.

The 4-port 10/100/100BASE-T RJ-45 VCCI modules are used to connect the XRE200 External Routing Engine to EX8200 switches to form an EX8200 Virtual Chassis. The VCPs are also used to connect XRE200 External Routing Engines together to provide a backup external Routing Engine for an EX8200 Virtual Chassis. See Figure 1

The 4-port 1000BASE-X GbE SFP VCCI module is used to connect two XRE200 External Routing Engines in the same EX8200 Virtual Chassis together. You can use the SFP ports to connect XRE200 External Routing Engines over distances up to 43.5 miles (70 km). You can also use the SFP VCPs to connect an XRE200 External Routing Engine to an EX8200 switch within a Virtual Chassis only if an intermediary switch is used. The intermediary switch is required because the management (MGMT) port on the Routing Engine (RE) modules or Switch Fabric and Routing Engine (SRE) modules of an EX8200 switch do not support SFP connections. See Understanding Long-Distance Virtual Chassis Port Configuration for an EX8200 Virtual Chassis for additional information on long-distance EX8200 VCP connections. See Figure 2 for an illustration of the 4-port 1000BASE-X GbE SFP VCCI module.

Each VCCI module can be installed in one of the two VCCI slots on the front panel of the XRE200 External Routing Engine. The XRE200 External Routing Engine supports up to two VCCI modules and any combination of types of VCCI modules. You can install an RJ-45 VCCI module in one VCCI module slot and an SFP VCCI module in the other VCCI module slot, for instance.

We recommend configuring all EX8200 Virtual Chassis with a redundant XRE200 External Routing Engine. You must use two VCCI modules if your EX8200 Virtual Chassis has five or more member switches and a redundant XRE200 External Routing Engine. You do not need to purchase a second VCCI module if your EX8200 Virtual Chassis has four or less member switches.

VCCI modules are field-replaceable units (FRUs).

Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Module in an XRE200 External Routing Engine

The hard disk drive (HDD) module in an XRE200 External Routing Engine is a 160 GB module. The XRE200 External Routing Engine is shipped with two HDD modules, one in each HDD module slot on the front panel of the external Routing Engine. See Figure 3.

HDD modules are hot-removable and hot-insertable field-replaceable units (FRUs).

Hard Disk Drive LEDs on an XRE200 External Routing Engine

An XRE200 External Routing Engine ships with two Hard Disk Drive (HDD) modules. Each HDD module on the external Routing Engine has two LEDs—a Hard disk Activity LED and a Hard disk Failure LED.

Figure 4 shows the HDD module LEDs.

You can monitor HDD module status by observing the LED states of both LEDs. Table 1 describes the LED states.
