Description

Disable PIM packet registers on the first-hop router.

With PIM, the first-hop router (FHR) is the device connected to the PIM rendezvous point (RP). With the usual PIM behavior, the FHR encapsulates multicast packets in PIM register messages (which registers the source with the PIM RP) and sends the register messages to the PIM RP. The PIM RP registers the multicast (S,G) route, and decapsulates the multicast packets to forward them on to the receivers. After the RP has calculated and added the path to the source to its multicast routing tree, the RP sends a PIM register stop message toward the FHR.

Devices that might not be able to encapsulate (or decapsulate) multicast packets in PIM register messages will not generate the PIM register stop message. Without a PIM register stop message, the source registration process doesn't terminate properly. As a result, you can set this option on devices that act as FHRs to avoid keeping the PIM registration process in an unterminated state.
