Upgrade Juniper License Keys During Software Upgrades
Learn how to upgrade Juniper License Keys during software upgrades. Understand the Juniper License Key upgrade process, and license change scenarios.
When you typically upgrade the software version for your Juniper device or software:
- You don’t normally need to install an updated License Key.
- The old License Key will continue to work in the device or software.
Sometimes, a new software version might require you to install a new License Key for these reasons:
- Support a different License Key format.
- Support new software features that are available with the upgraded software version.
If a new software version requires you to install an updated License Key, the product Release Notes for the software version provides this information. Ensure to review the Release Notes for your Juniper product and software versions.
Juniper License Key Upgrade Process
Here are the steps to get the new License Key for your upgraded software version from the Juniper Agile Licensing (JAL) Portal.
- Log in to the JAL Portal.
Under My Activations, find the activated license that you want to upgrade. You can search using Device Serial Number, Product Name, Software Support Reference Number, and so on.
- Click Upgrade.
Software Version Upgrade/Downgrade window displays details of the currently active license.
- Select the required new software version from the pulldown menu.
- Add any notes you require for this new activation. Add an Email Address to receive new License Key by email.
- Click Activate.
You can receive the new License Key for the new software version by email. You can even download the new License Key from My Activations.

I want to change the term of my Subscription license so that my subscription end dates are co-termed. |
Change in license duration or term is available as part of a Subscription license renewal only. Request the new term as a modification to the renewal quote before placing the renewal sales order. If you need to change the license term at another time, you need to purchase the new license term. Contact your Juniper Partner or Account Team for assistance. |
I want to move from an on-premise application to a cloud-hosted SaaS service. |
If you need to move from an on-premise product to a cloud-hosted SaaS service, then it is considered new product purchase. Hence, you need to purchase a new entitlement for the new SaaS service. Contact your Juniper Partner or Account Team for assistance. |
I have an existing ‘universal’ License Key for my product, and I want to migrate to the Flex three-tier model license. |
