Juniper and Mist AI deliver learning-first technology

In the state of Victoria in Australia, more than 1,200 students attend Catholic College Wodonga for their Year 7 to Year 12. The school opened in 1979, and to better support its one-to-one laptop program as it advances its educational mission, it has upgraded to Juniper’s AI-Native Networking Platform.

Challenge

Catholic College Wodonga committed to its digital transformation journey with its first stop the upgrade of its wired and wireless networks. The project had multiple goals and a modern, forward-looking vision.

The IT team wanted to simplify management with automation and a holistic, unified console that provided visibility into networks. Students often lost their laptops and IT wanted a way to easily locate them. IT wanted to improve network performance for better student, faculty, and staff experiences. Overall, IT support requirements needed to decrease while user experiences improved.

Catholic College Wodonga took a leap forward with the Juniper AI-Native Networking Platform, the only fully integrated AI-Native portfolio of campus and branch solutions. With the full stack Juniper solution, the school’s IT team can manage wireless and wired access under a common Mist AI engine and microservices cloud infrastructure. The Juniper wireless access points provide fast, reliable Wi-Fi in the classrooms and across the campus. The school has everything it needs to deploy quickly and operate easily. The Juniper AI-Native Networking Platform also lowers the school’s TCO and OpEX and delivers assured user experiences.

Solution

Juniper AI-Native wired and wireless networking

Catholic College Wodonga relies on Juniper’s AI-Native Networking Platform for 95 classrooms in 13 buildings across campus.

Students connect their laptops to learning resources and the internet. Faculty and staff have reliable access to the student information system and other applications. Juniper AP33 access points deliver high performance Wi-Fi 6 and virtual Bluetooth® Low Energy technology indoors, with the ruggedized Juniper AP63 access points providing Wi-Fi outdoors.

Juniper EX switches offer exceptional performance and reliability from the core to the edge. The school’s IT administrators can manage both the wired and wireless network from the Juniper Mist portal. The Juniper Marvis Virtual Network Assistant minimizes network downtime and disruptions with its AIOps. Using AIOps, IT achieves a faster MTTR and has visibility across the full stack to ensure excellent user experiences.

Outcome

Complaint-free connectivity

The IT team replaced the Wi-Fi network across campus in less than two weeks. “The hardest part was finding the right spot to screw in the AP brackets,” said Stephen Joyce, ICT Services Leader at Catholic College Wodonga.

The team used templates to configure the wireless and the EVPN-VXLAN campus fabric. Once deployed, Marvis took on engineering tasks, reducing troubleshooting and proactively fixing potential issues before users noticed.

 Streamlined standardized testing
Before Juniper, IT relied on users to let them know when the network was down. That lack of visibility was especially problematic during annual standardized testing. Now, the wireless network can accommodate 200-plus students in the same space, and fewer teachers are needed to proctor.

 No downtime for controller updates
Juniper’s cloud-based microservices eliminates controllers and new features are automatically available. “The network is always up,” said Joyce. “We never have to manually update the controllers.”

 Marvis takes on engineering role
Marvis has proven its mettle to the IT staff, proactively fixing network issues, and identifying bad cables and problematic multicast DNS traffic. “Marvis tells us if a problem is a client, a switch, or an app issue,” said Joyce.

Catholic College Wodonga Outcome
“Once we moved to Juniper, we don’t get user complaints about the network anymore.”
