Removing a Fan Module from an XRE200 External Routing Engine

XRE200 External Routing Engines have two fan modules on the rear panel. The fan modules are hot-removable and hot-insertable field-replaceable units (FRUs): You can remove and replace them without powering off the external Routing Engine or disrupting external Routing Engine functions.

Ensure that you have the following parts and tools available to remove a fan module:

  • An antistatic bag or an antistatic mat

To remove a fan module from an external Routing Engine (see Figure 1):

  1. Place the antistatic bag or the antistatic mat on a flat, stable surface.
  2. Pull the latch on the fan module faceplate toward the fan and gently pull the fan module toward you. The fan module will unlatch.
    Warning

To avoid injury, do not touch the fan with your hands or any tools as you slide the fan module out of the chassis—the fan might still be running.

  3. When the fan stops spinning, grasp the fan module tightly to avoid dropping it and remove the fan module from the fan module slot.
  4. Place the fan module in the antistatic bag or on the antistatic mat.

Note

When a fan module is removed, Fan/Blower is Absent is logged in the system log and the system raises a minor alarm.

Installing a Fan Module in an XRE200 External Routing Engine

XRE200 External Routing Engines have two field-replaceable unit (FRU) fan modules on the back panel. The fans are hot-removable and hot-insertable FRUs: You can remove and replace them without powering off the external Routing Engine or disrupting external Routing Engine functions.

Ensure that you have the following parts and tools available to install a fan module:

  • A Phillips (+) screwdriver, number 2

To install a fan module in an external Routing Engine (see Figure 2):

  1. Remove the fan module from its bag.
  2. Ensure the fan module is properly aligned with the fan module slot by aligning the latch on the fan module with the latch connector receptacle in the fan module slot. The latch connector receptacle is on the left side of the left fan module slot and on the right side of the right fan module slot.
    Warning

To avoid injury, do not touch the fan with your hands or any tools as you slide the fan module into the chassis—the fan may start running.

  3. Insert the fan module into the fan module slot at a slight angle, making sure the side of the fan module opposite the fan module latch is inserted first into the fan module slot.
  4. Slide the fan module into the slot. Gently push the fan module into the slot until the fan module latch securely latches the fan module into the slot.
