Overview

Port speed is the maximum amount of data that the line card transmits through a port in a second. Port speed is measured in Kilobits per second (Kbps), Gigabits per second (Gbps), or Terabits per second (Tbps).

The following are the different types of ports:

  • Switch ports: Devices plug into a switch port. You can also use the switch ports as the uplink ports.
  • Uplink ports: To connect switch to switch and are faster than switch ports.
  • Console ports: Use the console ports to:
    • Control a switch. The console port is usually on the rear side of a switch.
    • Program, configure, turn on or turn off the switch.

Channelization

You can split a high-speed port on a network equipment into several low-speed ports. For example, you can channelize a 100 Gbps port into four 25 Gbps ports.

Figure 1: Channelization of Speed Channelization of Speed

Autonegotiation

Autonegotiation enables a port on a device on the other end of the link to determine the optimal values for the following:

  • Speed

  • Duplex mode

Autonegotiation is a signaling mechanism used by Ethernet over twisted pair. In this process, the connected devices first share their capabilities regarding these parameters and then choose the highest performance transmission mode they both support. Autonegotiation takes place when a device and a switch have different NIC cards.

Interface Naming Conventions

Each interface name includes a unique identifier and follows a naming convention. When you configure the interface, use the interface name. You can either configure a port as a single interface (non-channelized interface) or partition the port into smaller data channels or multiple interfaces (channelized interfaces).

When multiple interfaces are supported on a physical port, you use the colon (:) notation in the interface naming conventions as a delimiter to differentiate the multiple interfaces on a physical port. In the interface naming convention, xe-x/y/z:channel:

  • x refers to the FPC slot number.
  • y refers to the PIC slot number.
  • z refers to the physical port number.
  • channel refers to the number of channelized interfaces.

When the 40-Gigabit Ethernet interfaces (et-fpc/pic/port) are channelized as 10-Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, the interface appears in the xe-fpc/pic/port: channel format, and channel is a value of 0 through 3.

Port Ranges and System Modes

QFX Series devices and EX4600 switches can support different port ranges depending on the device, media type of the interface, the software that is running on the device, and the system mode.

Table 2: Port Ranges for Different Media Types

Device

Port Ranges

QFX3500

0-5 and 42-47 on PIC0 for Fiber Channel (fc) interface, with a total of 12 available Fibre Channel ports. Fibre Channel ports are not supported on QFX3500, QFX3600, and QFX5100 switches running Enhanced Layer 2 software.

0-41 on PIC0 for a Gigabit Ethernet (ge) interface The total number of available Gigabit Ethernet ports is 36, because 12 of the remaining 48 ports are reserved for Fibre Channel and 10-Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Fibre Channel ports cannot be configured as Gigabit Ethernet ports.

0-47 for a 10-Gigabit Ethernet (xe) interface is 0 through 47 on PIC 0. 0-15 on PIC1 for a 10-Gigabit Ethernet (xe) interface. The total number of available 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports is 64.

0-3 for a 40-Gigabit data plane uplink interface on PIC 1.

0-3 on PIC 2 for a for a 40-Gigabit Ethernet interface.

QFX3600

8-63 on PIC 0 for a for a 10-Gigabit Ethernet interface. There are 56 available ports.

2-15 on PIC1 for a 40-Gigabit Ethernet interface. There are 14 available ports.

0-7 on PIC1 for a for a 40-Gigabit data plane uplink interface. There are eight available ports.

QFX3600 running Enhanced Layer 2 Software

0-63 on PIC 0 for a 10-Gigabit Ethernet interface. There are 64 available ports.

0-15 on PIC 0 for a 40-Gigabit Ethernet interface. There are 16 available ports.
QFX5100-48S and QFX5100-48T switches running Enhanced Layer 2 Software 0-47 on PIC 0 for a 10-Gigabit Ethernet interface. There are 48 available ports. When you channelize the 6 40-Gbps QSFP+ ports on 0 through 5 on PIC 1, there are 72 available ports.
QFX5100-48S and QFX5100-48T switches running a QFabric software package

0-47 on PIC 0 for a 10-Gigabit Ethernet interface. There are 48 available ports. The valid port range for a 40-Gbps QSFP+ port is 0 through 5 on PIC 1. There are six available ports. On PIC 1, ports 0 and 1 are reserved for fte ports. You cannot convert these fte ports to xe or xle ports.

EX4600 switches running Enhanced Layer 2 Software

0-23 on PIC 0 for a 10-Gigabit Ethernet interface. There are 24 available ports. When you channelize the 4 40-Gbps QSFP+ ports on 24 through 27 on PIC 0. There are 40 available ports.
